In May 1945 the USS Lagarto along with her crew of 86 sailors disappeared while on patrol in the Gulf of Thailand. She is one of 52 US subs lost during WWII and May 3rd 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary her sinking.
Resting in 78 meters of water 120 nautical miles from eastern Thailand the wreck was discovered in 2005. Since this time the site has been entangled with fishing nets and potentially threatened by illegal salvagers - her present condition is unknown.
Using cutting edge 3D photogrammetry, underwater video and photographs this project will undertake a comprehensive survey of the wrecksite . A USA flag will be flown over the wreck on the 3rd of May to commemorate the 75th anniversary of its sink.
Combining leading technical divers and professional maritime archaeologists this project marks a new frontier for the investigation of underwater cultural heritage in the Asia-Pacific region.
